We made it to Las Vegas and decided to grab lunch at Nellie’s Southern Kichen in the MGM Grand. I’m from the south, so eating something that would remind me of my youth sounded like a good idea. Unfortunately, it didn’t go as planned.
We started with the “Southern Rolls”, which consisted of BBQ chicken, mac & cheese, bacon, and drunken collard greens (cooked with beer, bacon, and brown sugar), wrapped in a fried egg roll. These were absolutely delicious.
For our entrees, we had “Catfish and Grits” and “Chicken and Waffles”.
The catfish was fried with cornmeal (southern), but the fillet was not very thick, which made the result tough to eat, not very tender. If you’re going to use cornmeal, always best to either have a thick fillet or go the nugget route. The grits were standard, however, there was a Cajun cream sauce that redeemed the dish.
The Chicken and Waffles were good, in part. The waffle was light and fluffy, but the chicken was standard. We could taste some seasoning salt, but nothing special. That being said, the dish had cinnamon honey butter and maple syrup drizzle that was outstanding. Eating the chicken WITH the sauce, was what made it worthwhile.
We decided to add a side of the collard greens, since they were so good in the appetizer (mentioned above). These were great all by themselves.
For dessert, because why not, we ordered the peach cobbler a la mode. It was uneventful. I was hoping for cinnamon or nutmeg, something to spice it up a bit, but no such luck. It was tasty, just not what we were hoping for.
All in all, I would invest in the “Southern Rolls” and the “Drunken Collards’, but not really much else. We will give it another try, ordering different entrees and see how that goes.
